Mare Island Brewing Co

In our Spring Newsletter, we mentioned we were preparing for lift off. Battling our way through the pandemic, beginning to reopen our taprooms (and launching a new one!), and getting back to hosting events. And now it definitely feels like we're starting to hit cruising altitude. Our Ferry Taproom and Coal Shed Brewery are back to regular, pre-pandemic hours, the First Street Taphouse is officially open, we're easing back into events, and getting ready to open our new Whaleboat Room at the Coal Shed Brewery soon!

Lots of great things on the horizon. But of course none of this would be possible without our amazing and dedicated team, who have worked super hard to make all this possible. So, a big THANK YOU to each and everyone of you. And to all of our beautiful beer-loving fans... you're keeping us busy, and we appreciate it.

A new special/private events space at our Coal Shed Brewery

You might have seen some of the construction happening at our Coal Shed Brewery lately. We're busy building out The Whaleboat Room – a new dedicated space for special/private events. We took over the suite next door, and are creating a portal through the wall to connect it to our Coal Shed Brewery. When its finsihed this fall, it will feature its own bar, outdoor beer garden, killer sound system, and A/V. We're super excited about this pupose-built space for events showcasing the amazing heritage of whaleboat racing on the Mare Island Strait. We can't wait to unveil it to you all, but for now, check out the above image of our friend and local artist Micah Hammac of TreeBed Design working on hand-painting the original 1938 blueprint of the physical whaleboat we've incorporated into the design of the space.

Interested in booking an event in the Whaleboat Room? Fill out this form on our website, and we'll follow up with all the details when we're ready to start booking private events!

We're live.. and we're just getting started!

In-case you missed it, this June we officially launched our newest location, the First Street Taphouse in downtown Benicia. Firstly – nothing but love to everyone in Benicia and the local community who have come out to visit us. Secondly, we're just getting started. We recently got our new outdoor parklets installed, Chef David brought on a new executive sous chef who's been kicking out some pretty unique weekly specials (shout-out to Chef Jurem!), and we're working on finishing the upstairs to get it ready for live music, trivia, and private events. We're hoping to expand our hours and add regular brunch service soon as well... but we're definitely going to need to add a few more solid members to the team first... and if that's you... check out our open positions.

The Fall 2021 Yardbird Party was an epic, Olympic inspired riot. It was the first time since the pandemic that we felt like we were able to get back to the true spirit of the Yardbird Pick-up Party. An epic torch lighting ceremony, a flame throwing garden gnome (courtesy of local artists Flaming Lotus Girls), a close battle in the Yardbird Games, Chef David and team killed it on the food, and we even had a ferry from SF Bay Ferry join the party to celebrate the release of our new collaboration brew with them. So, thank you to all of our cherished Yardbird Beer Club members who came out to make this an awesome and super fun party.

A Special New Holiday Yardbird Release

ATTN: Yardbirds (and Yardbird prospects) – Our Three Wisemen are coming your way this holiday season.Three hand-crafted, barrel aged brews, made specifically for our Yardbird Beer Club members. Two of them are brand new releases, and the other is one we've never bottled until now. Each inspired by a legendary figure with ties to Mare Island/Vallejo history.

Farragut's Barrel Aged Farmhouse Saison
While this saison has been in our line-up since the early days, we've never bottled it until now. Aged with souring yeast in white wine barrels from White Rock winery in Napa, each batch develops its own unique variations during barrel aging and blending.

Don Vallejo's Barrel Aged Mexican Lager
We took a fan favorite – our Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo Mexican Lager – and aged it in former agave barrels from Loch & Union Distillery in Napa Valley.

Chesty's Barrel Aged Stout
Chesty put some hair on our Coal Shed Stout. Aged in former rye barrels we got from our Mare Island neighbors at Savage & Cooke Distillery.

Yardbirds, lookout for more details on our Three Wisemen holiday release coming this winter. Not a Yardbird? Learn more about joining our beer club on our website.

Ferry No. 2 IPA
A New Collaboration Brew with SF Bay Ferry

We're excited to announce our new collaboration with San Francisco Bay Ferry for their Brews with Views project!

Together with our friends at East Brother Beer Co. in Richmond, and Faction Brewing in Alameda – we’ve each brewed a unique ferry-themed beer celebrating our communities, and the SF Bay Ferry routes that connect them.

Look out for our Ferry No. 2 IPA on select SF Bay Ferry routes (including the Vallejo–SF route). And if you're ferrying from the Vallejo terminal, make sure to stop by our Ferry Taproom and pick-up a special voucher that will get this brew in your hand for only $1.

History Behind The Name:

Ferry No. 2 was built in 1879 in Oregon, and plied the waters of Portland before being brought to the Bay Area in the 1890s. Here she was renamed “SS Vallejo”, and served as a passenger ferry transporting visitors and shipyard workers between Vallejo and Mare Island for 50 years. After WWII, she was sent to Sausalito to be scrapped, and her story would have ended there had it not been for the local artists who bought her. She was converted into a houseboat and art studio, and over the years hosted gatherings among countercultural luminaries (including the famous “Houseboat Summit”). Timothy Leary, Alan Ginsberg, Janis Joplin, and Jack Kerouac have all partied aboard her storied hull. She sits in Sausalito to this day, and with this IPA, we toast to her legacy.

A few new releases for fall...

General Order No. 99 Barrel Aged Porter – 8.8% ABV
The cornerstone of the Fall Yardbird Release – General Order No. 99 is our finest porter aged in former whiskey and pinot noir barrels, blended, and bottle conditioned to perfection in a historic bomb shelter here on Mare Island. The only way to guarantee you can get your hands on this one is to join our Yardbird Beer Club.

Ferry No. 2 IPA – 6.5% ABV
A modern IPA with an aroma full of passionfruit and tangerine, packed with a globe-spanning hop profile of South African Southern Aroma, Australian Galaxy, and American Amarillo. Named in honor of the local legend, Ferry No. 2. Available now in cans and on draft at all three of our taproom locations.

Monomoy Märzen Lager – 5.5% ABV
Historically, the coming of fall triggered the annual Whaleboat Racing Regatta here on the Mare Island Strait... a tradition that carries on today during Vallejo Waterfront Weekend. We carry on that tradition with this German-style Märzen Lager. Just in time for Oktoberfest too. Available on draft and in cans at our taproom locations starting Saturday, September 25th.

Six Buckets Russian Imperial Stout – 9.5% ABV
We're bringing this one back for the first time since we brewed it back in 2017. A hearty brew for fall, we named this one in honor of the six sailors from the Russian Imperial Fleet who are buried in the Mare Island Cemetary. Their efforts... and buckets of water... helped to save San Francisco from a large fire in 1863. Now available in cans to go only at our taprooms.

We're growing, and looking for more great team members to join us in our taprooms, the brewery production floor, and on the road delivering our beers throughout the Bay. If you're looking for a new opportunity to join a fast-growing team, check out our openings on our jobs page.
