Mare Island Brewing Co

While we’re certainly not flying high above the clouds yet, we now feel we are no longer stuck at the Covid gate. Indeed, last winter, during the regional lockdown…that was the worst version of stuck at the gate: middle seat, crying unattended babies on either side, broken tray latch, air conditioning not working, no food, not allowed to unbuckle the seatbelt, full bladder...

Now? Now we feel like we’re actually mid-way on the runway, accelerating fast towards liftoff, albeit with a warning from the captain that the skies might be a little bumpy until we once again hit cruising altitude. All our employees are back (what troopers to muscle through all this)! We even have some new ones. We’re planning for an imminent full reopening of our taprooms (including opening a new one) and return to special events (including Yardbird Parties!). We’ve also expanded our deliveries to retailers and restaurants in the area. Yes, we’ve been very, very busy during this "downtime", and now we’re ready for all that work to pay off. Read on...

A few updates on what's happening in our taprooms.

We fought hard to remain open throughout this pandemic – and with our amazing team, and some difficult adjustments, we’ve been able to do it. Now, we’re gearing up for a return to extended service hours, and full-capacity indoor/outdoor dining as soon as we get the green light (Newsome says June 15th?). We’re also looking forward to bringing back live music at the Ferry Taproom, and once again hosting private events at the Coal Shed Brewery. We even have a brand new, dedicated private event space in the works!

We also recently launched new Instagram and Facebook accounts for each of our locations. So, if you want to stay in the know about what's going down at each of them, follow us on those channels.

Opening Soon!

The construction is done, the booths are in-place, the TVs are hooked-up, and we even have a time capsule in the bathroom

Oh, and outdoor seating. We're working closely with the City of Benicia on plans for parklets in-front of the building. We'll have outdoor seating on the sidewalk as well.

While we're not quite ready to announce an official opening date just yet, things are progressing nicely, so be on the lookout for an announcement in the coming weeks.

Finally, we have to throw some love at the community in Benicia for the outpouring of excitement and support you've shown about us coming to town. Can't wait to be serving you all up some fresh pints and great food soon!

The Man, The Legend, "The Omar"

We recently installed a new fermentation tank, and for those that don't know our history, we always name our tanks in honor of the people who have been integral to our success.

“The Omar” was dedicated to Omar (our UPS driver) while he was present, during a routine delivery. Never underestimate the value of a solid UPS driver who can ensure your hops and yeast arrive on time, and the beer and Yardbird shipments go smoothly. Plus, he's just a great dude.

Expanding Our Retail & Restaurant Presence

We needed this new tank because our new outside sales rep., Shaun has been crushing it. He's been hard at work expanding our footprint at restaurants, bars, and retailers throughout the Bay Area (check the beer finder below to see his hard work in action).

Shaun is also a Benicia resident, and former professional basketball player to boot (we’re expecting big things out of him for our whaleboat racing team).

Find Our Beers Near You

Try out our new beer finder to find our beers at a restaurant, bar, or retailer in your area. And if you can't find them at your favorite spot, drop as an email and we'll have Shaun swing by to make it happen.

Yardbirds  - the Spring 2021 Yardbird Release is upon us. The dog tag machine is working overtime, your brews are coming off the canning/bottling line now, and we’re working on getting your Yardbird Cases ready for shipping/pick-up.

We’re super excited for this spring’s release, and we think you will be too. We’ve got a brand new brew for you, some perfect springtime seasonals, and we’re even throwing in one of our rarely-brewed, yet oft-requested beers.

Oh, and the Pick-up Party. This is one you won't want to miss...

Yep, we're hosting a Luau and Piegon Race, live and in-person at our Coal Shed Brewery on May 8th. We've worked closely with Solano County, and have received their approval on our plans for a super-fun and covid-safe outdoor event on our waterfront. Live music, luau style food, pigeon racing and more!

Speaking of pigeons, pictured on the left here is our friend Norm and a few of his homing pigeons on a practice flight at our Coal Shed Brewery. Norm worked at Mare Island Naval Shipyard for 30 years. He's also president of the Tricity Homing Pigeon Club - and has graciously agreed to bring down a few of his beloved flock for this event.

Fresh brews for spring are on the way!

Murphy the Pig Fresh Saison
Always fresh, always vibrant, but not always easy to get your hands on. Our Murphy the Pig Fresh Saison is the cornerstone of our Spring Yardbird Case. The easiest way to secure it is to join our Yardbird Beer Club. Though, we might have a limited amount available at our taprooms in mid-May.

Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo Mexican Lager
Drum roll... fireworks... it's back! This fan-favorite is available starting today – on draft and in cans – at both our Ferry Taproom and Coal Shed Brewery. And just in time for Cinco de Mayo too.

Horse & Cow Hefeweizen
We've only brewed this one a handful of times – but we're super excited to be bringing it back this spring. Coming to our taprooms in cans and on draft mid-May.

New Brew For You?
We've got a killer, brand-spanking-new brew that we can't tell you about yet! The big reveal happens on May 8th at our Yardbird Pick-up Party. After that though, you'll be able find it at our taprooms. We can't wait for you guys to try this one – so keep an eye on the socials for an announcement coming after the Yardbird Pick-up Party.

While we are hesitant to talk like CV19 is behind us, lest we jinx the recovery, we want to take a moment to say a heartfelt thanks to all of you who supported us through the darkest days.

That goes for all of you taxpayers via the “P’s” (PPP1, PPP2), Solano County (we got a small grant), and an incredible outpouring of customer support. So many of you made a point to support our take-out operations, with many of you leaving very generous tips to help support staff, and a couple of folks even reached out and gave a direct donation to our staff (touching, appreciated, put to good use).

We were determined not to close, even temporarily, during all this. We figured Mare Island Naval Shipyard never closed during the Civil, Cold, or two World Wars. So, we weren’t going to let a pesky little thing like CV19 close us down. But it hasn’t been easy. We’re looking forward to a fantastic second half of the year, and we hope to see you with an MIBC beer in your hand soon...

Damn the Torpedoes,

Kent and Ryan
