Before it was a taphouse...
The building that is now home to our First Street Taphouse has a long and storied history in downtown Benicia. Originally built in the 1890s, the building began as Elsie's Rooming House (presumably a reputable hotel), before later gaining notoriety as one of lower First Streets many former bordellos. Throughout the years, the building has been home to many iconic Benicia businesses, and at one point, was even used as the studio for famed American sculptor, and Benicia native, Robert Arneson.
